Apple Fitness+ is a subscription library of guided workouts. Muster Up is a free team fitness competition — small squads, two weeks, a shared map. One supplies the class; the other supplies the people who expect you to show up for it.
Apple Fitness+ prices are from apple.com as of September 2026 and may change. Muster Up pricing is described on this site’s home page.
| Apple Fitness+ | Muster Up | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A library of guided video workouts and meditations from Apple — HIIT, strength, yoga, cycling, and more. | A team fitness competition app. Small squads — 5 in most competitions, 10 max — go head to head for two weeks. |
| Price | $9.99/month or $79.99/year, or bundled in Apple One Premier.Per apple.com, September 2026. | Free. Every competition is free today and Zero Day stays free for good.Camera-verified competitions will be paid later; founding members and crews are permanently exempt. |
| Hardware | iPhone required; Apple Watch adds live metrics on screen. | Just your phone. Cardio syncs from Apple Health, bodyweight moves are logged in the app. |
| Who you compete with | Yourself, mostly. Apple’s built-in Activity competition is one-on-one, seven days, and needs an Apple Watch. Group Workouts via SharePlay let friends take a class together. | A small squad — 5 in most competitions, 10 max — against other squads. Everyone’s activity moves the same team up the map. |
| What keeps you going | Great instructors and closing your rings. | People: teammates who notice when you go quiet, a scoreboard, and a two-week finish line. |
| Team tools | SharePlay group sessions. | Team chat, task board, video calls and a shared progress map — every squad gets them. |
| What counts | Fitness+ classes and, with an Apple Watch, your rings. | Zero Day: any cardio (a walk counts) plus air squats, lunges and push ups. Other competitions also count yoga, meditation or prayer, breathing, reading and lifting. |
| Platforms | iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Apple Watch. | iPhone app and a web version that works on Android. Android app is in the works. |
A Fitness+ session recorded to Apple Health can count toward your team’s climb, so the two stack cleanly: Apple coaches the workout, your squad makes sure it happens.
They do different jobs. Fitness+ gives you the workout; Muster Up gives you a squad that expects you to do it. Many people use both, and Muster Up is free.
Muster Up reads cardio from Apple Health. When a Fitness+ workout is recorded to Apple Health — cardio classes in particular — it can count toward your squad. Strength and yoga count in competitions that include those activity types.
No. Your phone is enough. An Apple Watch helps because it records cardio to Apple Health automatically, but you can also log activities directly in the app.
Nothing right now, and Zero Day stays free for good. Camera-verified competitions will be paid later — you pay for a fair competition where every rep is counted on camera, not for a subscription. Founding members and founding crews who join before paid competitions launch are permanently exempt.
They use the web version at app.joinmuster.com today — same squads, same map, same team chat — so a mixed iPhone and Android crew can still compete together. The Android app is in the works.
Zero Day is free, starts every other Monday, and you don’t need to bring anyone.
